Challenges to Consider from MLK Day 2025

Reverend Mark-Anthony Middleton, mayor pro temp of Durham, NC, gave a sermon during the Martin Luther King Day Memorial March in Raleigh, NC. His challenges at the end of his sermon are good advice for Corporate Leaders, Safety Managers and Worksite Wellness Program Managers.

He challenged attendees to take their own oath to uphold the principles King lived by. He asked them to repeat:

  • “I swear or affirm to keep the dream alive,”
  • “I swear or affirm to preserve, protect and defend human dignity and human rights.”
  • “I swear or affirm to treat people the way I want to be treated.”
  • “I swear or affirm to combat bullying and
  • …To say ‘good morning’ when no one says anything to me.”
  • “I swear or affirm to make”… (insert here: our community, our community in the workplace, our organization, our team…) the beloved community that King died for.”

There is so much more that could be said regarding fostering such a community. One where all stakeholders,

  • Have a sense of belonging and acceptance,
  • Perceive that what they do matters; they makes a difference,
  • Have meaning and purpose,
  • Feel respected,
  • Can be authentic,
  • Feel heard and recognized,
  • Know they are safe and sound.

What is needed to create such a place? What are the qualities necessary for leaders, managers, and all stakeholders to embrace? Let’s have a conversation!
