Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls

Slips, trips, and falls are a leading cause of injuries in the workplace. Falls result from two types: falls from an elevated level and falls on the same level. Both are extremely dangerous and can be disabling.

Surprisingly, the statistics indicate that slips, trips or falls on the same level remain the leading cause of non-fatal injury to workers, accounting for nearly one-third (32%) of all injuries. This is followed by overexertion such as material handling, lifting or carrying (17%) and being struck by a moving object (11%). More on exertion later!

Slips, trips and falls can occur in any setting. A serious injury that we helped investigate was an HR manager who got up quickly from their desk, their shoe caught on the carpet, and they fell forward, hitting their head on the wall, and lost consciousness. According to OSHA, 20-30% of workplace falls result in a moderate or severe injury like deep bruising, broken bones, or concussions and cause nearly 700 workplace fatalities per year – that’s 15% of all workplace deaths.

There are many precautions to prevent slips, trips, and falls. Here are a few considerations.

Considerations for the Organization:

  • Ensure adequate lighting
  • Install handrails
  • Invest in slip-resistant surfaces in high-risk areas and on stairs
  • Mark the edges of steps or elevation changes
  • Implement a ladder safety program and training
  • Conduct job hazard assessments
  • Establish a PPE policy including footwear
  • Engage employees in the process
